Why Coworking Spaces over Coffee Shops?

When you work from a coworking space, you’re geting a space that is purposefully catering to folks with laptops and work agendas. That means fewer fights over the outlets, but it can also mean higher prices. When you sit at a coffee shop for a day, you may pay $15 for coffee over the course of the day. There are few coworking spaces with a day rate that low, however: the lowest that I’ve regularly seen is around $25 and I’ve seen significantly higher.

Work Shifting - What the Best Places to Work Have in Common

Recently, Fortune Magazine published their annual list of the 100 Best Companies to Work for. It's always a popular read to check out the companies listed. If you haven't seen this year's list, you can check it out here.

What I always find more interesting that just the list of company names and their rankings, is what these companies offer their employees. To me, this is what the list is really about. It identifies best practices.

This year's list had some interesting data:

  • The top 10 best companies encouraged employees to balance their work and personal life
  • 82 of the 100 companies listed offered telecommuting

So, the key concept behind workshifting - being able to work productively from anywhere - are embraced by the companies considered to be the crème de la crème in Corporate America. This comes right after the Federal Government implemented the Telework Enhancement Act of 2010, mandating Federal Agencies to implement telework policies.

We love seeing articles like this! It reminds us why we got into the coworking business to begin with!

McCarthy had players fitted for Super Bowl rings Saturday night - JSOnline

In a show of bravodo over the top even for the way Packers coach Mike McCarthy has handled the six-game win-or-go-home journey, the players were fitted for Super Bowl rings -- Saturday night.

McCarthy actually put the fitting on the team's itinerary for Saturday night after all the speeches and pep talks were over, the coach dismissed the players and told them to go get their fingers measured for Super Bowl rings.

"That's our head coach," defensive end Ryan Pickett  said. "He's been the same way all year. He said he thought we were going to win it all, so we should have the rings fitted. After the meeting we just went out (into the hallway) and they had people there to measure us.

"We can't say enough about those guys. For us to battle back the way we did, it says something about the the whole organization."

Cornerback Sam Shields said he wasn't that surprised McCarthy did it.

"It was just something to show that he had a lot of confidence in us," Shields said. "Getting fitted for the ring showed he had confidence in us."

Team president Mark Murphy said he was aware of McCarthy's motivational tactic and was excited about it.

SEO should be like vacations... All-Inclusive

I couldn't resist grabbing the mindmap that SEOmoz had on the site today. This prediction from Rand Fishkin about how SEO will evolve to something more inclusive is, in my opinion, completely dead-on correct. There are too many facets to driving traffic for anyone with any title - be it SEO, social media or email or what have you - to be ignorant of the multitude of elements in the online marketing equation.

#7: We'll Start to Move Away from the Title "SEO" to Something More All-Inclusive

For years, I've prided myself being an SEO and embraced the title, the community, the positives and the negatives that come with it. But with the search engines expanding so far afield in the signals they consider and the verticals/media types they include, I have to face facts - SEO today calls for much more of a talented generalist than a pointed specialist. We need to be savvy about and good at so many facets of organic web marketing that to call us "SEOs" is less empowering and more limiting than in the past.

Thought Leadership Inteview on Craig Bading's Site

Image001
Craig Badings, thought leadership blogger and author of Brand Stand, the book on Thought Leadership, did an email interview with me recently and he just posted the back & forth on his site.  Here’s a peek at the whole interview.  Granted, some if it’s about “ME, ME, ME” so I’m a bit reluctant to post the blatant self-promo, but there may be a few good nuggets in there…

Q1: Dana you have successfully positioning yourself as a thought leader in all things marketing.  Given your experience of positioning yourself in this space, what are your tips for aspiring thought leaders in other industries?

Thanks, Craig.  There are many thought leaders in marketing, and it seems, to those of us peering in, that they’ve all just arrived one day. In reality, this is something that I started working on in 2002 and have followed a very deliberate plan to sharpen my expertise and position myself as someone that (I hoped) is worth listening to in the market.  Here are a few things that have helped me along the way.

1.    Have a plan. I know, that sounds really basic and boring, but for the last several years I have set plans and goals in place for publishing, speaking and other presence opportunities that were based on a long list of things that I thought made up the right moves for an emerging thought leader.

2.    Speak. Speaking and presenting is the #1 tool for business development and thought leadership advancement among those considered thought leaders. There’s nothing like being on stage to elevate our position. I could not be where I am without speaking. It also helps that I love doing it!

3.    Keep an idea file.  I keep several files for article ideas, speaking ideas and blog post ideas that help me stay on top of publishing as consistently as possible.  Keep the ideas flowing and make sure that they’re useful to your audience and you’ll see yourself rise quickly.

4.    Participate.  Thought leaders are only thought leaders if they’ve amassed a following.  You need to be involved in a community of peers in order to be seen by anyone as someone who might be useful to them.

Check out the rest of the interview and the rest of Craig’s site. Great stuff on there!
